What's the best way to clean muddy tennis shoes?

I was wearing my favorite Nike Air Max %26amp; fell into a mud hole up to my ankles. I want to get them cleaned up as good as possible. They are caked in mud. Is it better to wash the while they are still wet or let the dry then pound them together then wash or another solution.

Okay I have learned not to wash my shoes in the washer it breaks them down. Do not use bleach on them it also will break them down and eat thru the leather (if they are leather of course). also eats plastic. this is what I do I let the mud dry then I get off as much of the dried dirtas possible. I take an old tooth brush, tooth paste that has whitening in it and a rag. I wet the rag and the tooth brush put the tooth paste on the brush and scrub the shoe it can be time consuming but it really works and your shoes will look whiter than the day you bought them, also will smell great. LOL .I use the wet rag to wipe off the extra tooth paste. I didn't believe it when I was told. My daughter is in Marching band and they are not aloud to wash there shoes in the washer because of it breaking the shoes down. And this is what they told us parents to do. It really does work try it.
Reply:rinse them in the water hose or bath tube really well them put them in the washer,, i always wash my tennis shoes..if i have 4 loads of clothes i wash my shoes 4 times..i know it sounds stupid, but i have tennis shoes that i have had for 4 years and they dont even look that old, i cute grass in them and everything..you wash your clothes every time they get dirty why not wash your shoes once a month or when ever they get so dirty you dont want to wear them...

but never ever put them in the dryer they will shrink, i always put my on top of the dryer to dry or a heater vent,,works great
Reply:rinse off as much as you can and then wash them in the washing machine. let them air dry in the sun. it makes them whiter
Reply:rinse all the mud off with a hose and put in the washing machine let air dry
Reply:Dont let them dry!

OK the obvious.... hand scrub off all mud you can...

Then SOAK in a pail or dishpan completely submerge them in water for about 10 minutes..

Use a solution of Laundry soap and reg. bleach

1/4 cup per gallon of water

Then Toss them in the washer use bleachin the load as well... if you are worried about the agitator scraping off color or decals put them in a pillow case and tie shut first...

Id use warm or hot for washing...

if they have fabric areas with mud not only leather try a stain stick on those or rub laundry soap on those areas before tossing washer.

Good Luck
